2006 / The Year of the Phoenix

Emerging from the ashes of the old Library building on the Tenth Street Campus, the Nelson University Centre Education Society has found its second wind this year, thanks to your generous support and presence.

Most of the books from the David Thompson Library have been salvaged, thanks to the students and staff of Trafalgar Junior Senior Secondary School who moved them to a warm and dry room in their school. Thanks to the Board of School District 8 for allowing the use of this storage facility until July 2007.

The Society, the University Centre, and the rest of the Library Collection (un-catalogued books and periodicals) have been relocated to Chahko Mika Mall, thanks to a generous donation of space and utilities from the Mall, and to our community of volunteer movers.

Our doors are open 7 days a week, thanks to our constant flow of volunteers, permanent and transient. On June 1st, 2006, the Society launched their “First Shelf” of books ready to be borrowed by the community. Thank you to Corky Evans for being our guest of honor.

Our bookstore shelves are well stocked - thanks to your donations - and provide an appropriate income for the Society to take its next step. And so our minds are going at the speed of light towards an even better future.

Nelson University Centre offers a program of Liberal studies in the arts and sciences focusing on a global perspective, integrating world classics and contemporary issues.

Dedicated teaching faculty use an integrated curriculum to provide students of all ages with a solid academic background and an opportunity to question, learn and explore in small classroom environments.

Classes are small and professors are dedicated to teaching students of all ages. The goal is to inspire in each student a life-long learning process.

A core curriculum, consisting of a balance of courses in the humanities, the social and the natural sciences, provides the student with the tools of learning. Two areas of concentration give the student the opportunity to focus on more specific objectives in their studies in order to equip them for further study.

Together the core courses and the areas of concentration give the essential knowledge and skills to face the intellectual and social challenges of the 21st century.
